What's interesting is the discussion of "true hawks" we call all sorts of things hawks, but the narrower definition is just the Accipters like the Coopers and Sharp shinned. Buteos are something different so red tails are not "true" hawks. In Europe their Buteo is called a Buzzard which is used here for a kind of vulture probably b/c early settlers associating things from where they came from.

Had the same thing happen to me, a Coopers landed in a tree not far from me and just stared at me, really my brown straw hat with a turkey feather in it, probably realized at the last moment I wasn't a large bird.
